Reconnecting to My Culture

February 7, 2013 /

I do not want to feel frustrated like this anymore. I want to be
able to express myself through my speech with my relatives, so I am going to learn the basics of Spanish speaking once again from books, parents, music, and looking up unfamiliar words. Then
I plan to learn about my family’s history and Mexican history, or learn how to cook a Mexican dish or two through of all of my exploration of my cultural roots. I admire Serena because she
 kept speaking Hmong with
her relatives and that made
them develop a “Hmong connection.” However I
have little connection with
my relatives, especially my grandparents that do not speak English at all. I would like to get my thoughts across to them and have an actual conversation with them someday. I strongly encourage others, who are having the same problem, to take advantage of their surroundings and resources. Parents, books, and music can help with speech and help encourage oneself to speak out loud. Then, just like Mr. Moua did, parents can encourage their children to speak their language at home and teach them the correct way to say or pronounce certain words or sentences.
